College Life
8/29/2005
Things have not been working out the way I've wanted them to lately. I've found myself to be in an irritable mood for about the past week due to various things, and moving back to college really didn't help at all. There is something I care a lot about that I've been trying to do and I finally did it. Unfortunately, that didn't end up the way I wanted either. There's probably one or two of you that will read that and actually know what it means, but I'd like to keep it that way.
I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy this semester or not. I was semi-excited to move back in to school but now that I'm here I don't really care about it. It's back to the few people I actually know here and of course the classes I dread going to. Even after my first day I can already tell that one of my classes might claim the prize of 'worst class ever', so I'm not very excited for my Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.
School really doesn't give as much homework as people say it does. Sure, when the homework is hard it takes a while to do but it is never a huge portion. I thought I could keep myself occupied with it this semester to help take my mind off other things but that doesn't seem to be working so far.
I also don't understand some of the people here. There seems to be three or four different mindsets around. First, the people who enjoy parties and that sort of thing and rarely notice or care about people who don't do what they do. Next, the opposite end, the people who sit in their rooms all day and play video games and talk geek to each other all the time. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy talking geek and playing games but these people do it 24/7. The next group of people were probably the smart but weird people in high school. The kind who say things that are totally out of the blue or are just extremely weird. Finally, the people who are extremely devoted to school and spend a ton of time doing homework or studying. Somehow, these groups of people, in my eyes, exist at school. To me it seems like every person I have met finds their way into one of these groups or finds the friends they were meant to have in high school. Somehow, I just haven't found many people that I think share the same personality as me.
I'm hoping this year goes by fast.

Okay, okay

Okay, you win, I'll post pictures of the dorm soon. Just don't let me forget.
Today was filled with a lot of nothing again. Woke up later then ate brunch right away and met my parents and younger brother out front. They came up for the weekend originally to move me in but after changing plans, they were bringing the fridge and other larger objects. Later on we ate dinner and got ice cream. Finally, in the night, TJ, Adam, my roommate, and I watched a movie.
Oh, I also had a problem with my TV tuner which ate up a good 4 hours. I guess it's good I found out the problem now instead of after school had started.

I ended up moving up to school on the 25th instead of the orginally planned 26th. I didn't really have much to do around Green Bay anyway and there were some storms predicted for Friday so Thursday was a good day to come up. The new furniture is pretty nice and it actually isn't all busted up like last years stuff. I still haven't decided how to arrange the my desk but I'll probably just be lazy and leave it how it is now. It's hot in the room like always but the fan we bought seems to work pretty well as long as the door is open.
Books are expensive again. Thankfully most of my books this time are basically the same price new as used so I just bought new ones. One I had to order on amazon.com though, so hopefully it comes midway through next week. If not, I'm sure other people have it already.
My cellphone works great everywhere in Houghton except for TJ and Adam's room. I don't know why. Although, it doesn't look like I'll have the ability to sign on AIM or do any data features while I'm here. I still have to test it though. But I'll be keeping my phone on all the time if you want to reach me.
Maybe I'll take a picture of the furniture later, but don't get your hopes up.

Tomorrow is the last day of work
8/18/2005
Tomorrow is my last day at work for the summer. Overall, I think I've learned a lot, probably about as much as I did at school my first year, and I think I can apply a lot of the stuff to my school work. I'm guessing this will make my programs for classes go a lot faster because I've learned better techniques for everything, especially debugging. It's nice to know I won't have anything at work to worry about for a while but in a way I don't really want to leave. The summer started out fast with the training at work and I made a few good friends during the long days and then when the real work started in the office I made another great friend. I guess it just sucks how I won't be able to see them anymore, maybe not ever again.
So obviously, I will miss being home. I'll miss those friends from work, friends from high school, and my family. Last summer I couldn't wait to get to school and do all the college stuff but now I don't really care that much. Of course I want to go back but I'm just not as enthusiastic about it as I was last year.
In lighter news, this past week has been pretty fun. Saturday and Sunday I went geocaching with my brother and dad a few times. We ended up finding one out of the 5 or 6 we went looking for. I guess we just suck at looking around for them. The GPS takes us to the right place but we can never find it. Monday I went to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with TJ, Ashley, and a friend from work and then went to a bonfire. The movie was pretty good and the temperature was perfect for the fire. I haven't done too much since then but the Cubs have been winning so it's all good.
Oh, and I think I figured out the reason that gas is so expensive now. They want to steal as much money as they possibly can from college kids and their parents when the drive back and forth from school. Thanks gas companies.

Geocaching is fun stuff. After going out about three times looking for stuff with various people we've only managed to find one. It's still fun just to be outside and look for them though.
Most of the other intens at work either had their last day of work yesterday or early next week. The want a week or two off before school starts which I think is a pretty good idea. So, taking their advice, next week is my last week of work. I may be working at school with the company too, but we'll have to see. This week was actually one of the better weeks I've had at work in a while, fun and productive.
I got to go to the Packer game last Thursday with work also. We had a tailgate party which was pretty fun and then we got drenched for 2.5 hours while watching the game. Thankfully, we decided to walk back to our cars and get rain stuff before it actually started raining. It was a pretty good time, especially because we actually stayed until the Packers basically won and a ton of other people left earlier.
Today will be filled with geocaching. We're going looking in various places and hopefully we will find some. It should be a nice day out for this.

We saw the movie Stealth tonight. It was pretty horrible. The acting was bad and the movie was really cheesy. The second half of it was okay but the rest of it was total crap.
My brother heard about this thing called Geocaching on a Podcast he was listening to and we went to check out the website and it seems like a really fun thing to do. Basically, you are given coordinates to where a hidden container is and then you have to actually find it when you get there (GPS only gets you to around the item, not to it). Once you find it you sign the log book and then generally you take the item in the container and put another one in it's place. It seems like a fun thing to do.

The weekend trip was pretty good. We were in the car a lot but it was still fun. I took some panorama shots but I haven't had enough time to put them together and make sure they look all right.
I keep listening to the Goo Goo Dolls Live in Buffalo cd lately. I never really realized it but they have had a ton of really good songs. This cd just puts them all in one place and gives it a more modern feel. And some of it is more acoustic, which I like.
That's all for now.
