Long weekend
5/28/2007
It was nice to have a long weekend, not that I really needed it or anything. It was nice to do stuff outside, watch movies, and that sort of thing. Went to a friends house Saturday to play some multiplayer Wii then spent some time outside on my bike and out on walking trails around Rochester.

I'd like to take my bike to a path near a river about an hour south of Rochester but I think I need to ride it a little bit more before I go long distances. This weekend I went out a few times and it was pretty fun but pretty exhausting. One of the times I ran into an older couple geocaching at a local park. I stopped to talk to them, since you don't see that every day. It was their first time and they were trying to figure out how to use their GPS. I'm not sure if they ended up finding anything or not.

Since I ran into other people geocaching, I thought it would be fun to do today. I went looking for three of them in the area. Two of them were from a park within walking distance and the other was a little further away but also in a really nice park. I actually couldn't find one of them but I'll try again some other time.

I'm watching the playoffs right now. The Jazz are losing by a little bit against the Spurs. I've only seen a few of the Jazz games this year, all playoff games. Deron Williams is really a great player. He's like John Stockton except scores more points. Although I think he does give up more turnovers and his defense isn't as good. But this is only his second year. It will be interesting to see how good he is in another two or three years. The announces constantly compare his passes to Carlos Boozer to Stockton to Malone passes. They run the pick and roll just as well as those two did.

The Cubs keep losing, no surprise there. Their team is really good except for their bullpen. I believe they are near the top of the NL in batting average but their bullpen has lost over 10 games for them already this season. They need to trade for some good relief pitchers. If it were up to me, I'd try and trade Matt Murton. He's really good and young so can probably fetch some decent pitchers. The Cubs have several good outfielders in the minor leagues so I think they could deal with losing one.

DaveCam
5/24/2007
I decided to put my webcam back up and post it on the site. I used to call it DaveCam so I think I'll keep the same name. It will be pointed out my window almost all the time so you can take a look at the weather here or any weird activity behind my apartment building. It is also a pet walking area so maybe you'll see a dog or two. The DaveCam images are actually hosted on my computer at my apartment so if my computer is off, the webcam is off, or some similar situation then the webcam page will display a message saying that the webcam is unavailable right now. When loading the webcam page it will take about 10 seconds before showing you this error message.

Click here to see the webcam or click the link on the sidebar.

I tried to get this up yesterday but had some issues which I'll go into later. Here is a picture from DaveCam yesterday evening:

Storm
It was a pretty bad storm yesterday and all day today it's been raining.

So now on to why I couldn't get DaveCam working. I tried for hours and hours to get the Apache web server to be recognized by computers outside my home network and it wasn't working at all. I thought it could be Vista or my Linksys router but after experimenting with these two things I realized they were working perfectly fine. So the only remaining thing that could be the problem is the ISP, Charter. I did a bit of research on Google and found out that typically Charter blocks incoming packets on port 80 for residential customers. This means that without changing the port that Apache uses, it won't work. It's not a big deal (for me) that I can't use port 80, but it would have saved me hours of frustration if I had known that earlier. Another reason Charter is a terrible company.

New pictures
5/20/2007
I posted some pictures of my new apartment in Rochester. You can get to them by going to the pictures section or by clicking here.

I'll be going to Madison today to see some friends at a graduation party/birthday. I'm not looking forward to the drive too much but it should be worth it. Hopefully gas is cheap somewhere along the way!

I've been playing the Halo 3 Beta online with some online friends and I have to say that it is way better than Halo 2. I can't put my finger on exactly what I didn't like about Halo 2's multiplayer, but I think it may have had something to do with how common dual wielding was. It's much harder in Halo 3 to dual wield because they don't start you off with weapons that can do that. Overall, it seems to make it so that it isn't just luck on who ends up killing who, but skill. They have this awesome stats page now (for both Halo 2 and 3) that shows a ton of different stats for individual games and overall games. Check out my stats. I think it's cool that it keeps track of your overall kill to death ratio. That should tell people if you really are helpful to your team or not.

Netflix
5/19/2007
I started a trial of Netflix this week. I'm trying their 3 at a time plan, but I think it may be too many movies at once. If I watched one every day then it looks like I would have one at home each day and two in the mail, but I haven't been watching one per day so I think it's sort of a waste. I might change it to the 2 at a time plan instead.

If you use Internet Explorer you may have noticed my website looked messed up the past day or so after I added the Netflix movies on the left sidebar. It was a small typo that I had done that was causing it and it should be fixed now. Those movies on the side are movies that I have recently received from Netflix. It will automatically update itself as they send me new ones.

Anyway, off to Wal-Mart and then maybe a bike ride.

Rochester
5/17/2007
Well I'm all moved in to my new Apartment in Rochester. I'll post some pictures when I get around to making a page for them.

It was a really busy week last week. First my Dad and I packed everything in the U-Haul. This wasn't too bad except that the couch wouldn't fit back through the doors easily so we ended up taking them off. When we got to Green Bay, we had to unload everything to take the couch out, since I wasn't bringing it to Rochester, and put everything back in. Finally, we got to Rochester and had to take it to my apartment. Then we went to Ikea and a few other places to get some things that I needed. I was surprised that there aren't really any unencrypted wireless networks near my apartment. Because of that we had to live without Internet until Friday when the cable guy came. Finally, we went back to Green Bay for the weekend for a baseball game a Mother's Day.

As I mentioned, we went to a baseball game last Saturday. Hall of fame Cub Ryne Sandberg is the coach of the Peoria Chiefs and they were coming to Appleton to play the Timber Rattlers. Naturally, since my family is all Cubs fans we went to go see the team play and to see Ryne Sandberg. Of course, I forgot my camera and had to take pictures with my cell phone. I might post them, even though they are terrible. The Chiefs lost in true Cubs fashion, 11-1.

Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta started today. I had some spare time this morning before work so I downloaded it and tried played a game. It seems like it will be a pretty fun game when it comes out in September. Halo 2 was good but it didn't capture my attention like Halo 1 did. Maybe Halo 3 will do it again.
